Termination of an Employee

Whether the employee is failing to meet expectations or the company’s lack of funds is forcing a cut, terminating an employee is a difficult situation that requires sensitivity and preparation.

How-to-prepare
First, know the company policy. Prepare formal documentations if needed, this may include severance pay, documents that have to be signed, or finishing paycheck. It is best if there is an evidence of inconsistent work performance to give reference to. Clearly outline the main reason for the termination and be ready to answer any questions the employee may have. Then approach the employee by saying, “I have something to discuss with you”. Take him or her in an office away from other associates to discuss the problem.

The Unexpected
Termination is an emotional situation. Be sensitive, and understand that the employee may not fully comprehend at first or take it as gracefully as hoped. Say what is necessary but don’t overstate. Summarize key points for the firing and give reference to earlier warnings. Do not falter and hold true to the decision.

Show Professionalism
It is of utmost importance to show professionalism. Anything stated can be accounted for and could be subjected to a lawsuit. For this reason and out of the respect of the employee, it is important to part on amicable terms. End the meeting with a handshake, and sincerely wish the employee good luck in the future. Try to finish quickly and gracefully.
